Welcome to Corfu
Just a word about our beautiful island. Corfu is a very special part of Greece, being one of the few places in Europe where both European and Middle Eastern powers have ruled. As a result, Corfu has its own character - Greek, certainly, but with an indefinable trait that makes it a truly unique part of the Mediterranean.

Corfu stands at the entrance of the Adriatic Sea, straddles the Albanian and Greek frontiers and is barely 50 miles from the heel of Italy. Its unique position has contributed greatly to the tempestuous history of this greenest of Greek isles. Roman, Germans, Turkish, French, Russians, Italians and British - Corfu has seen them all and taken a little from each in becoming the proud and exciting island it is today.

The island's shape resembles a scythe - in Greek "Drepanon", which was one ancient name for Corfu. Geologists say it is the exposed crown of a submerged mountain range that broke off from the Greek-Albanian mainland. It is an emerald isle on a turquoise sea - the greenest of Greece's 1,425 islands, boasting beautiful scenery, endless groves of silvery olive trees, lovely beaches and luxuriant vegetation. The sound of the sea, the songs of a thousand birds, the braying of donkeys; these are the musical motifs of Corfu. Around 113,500 people live on this idyllic isle, the most densely populated rural area of Greece, many of whom have never been off the island. Corfiots are charming, endearing people who retain a fresh, open and simplistic approach to life. To an observer Corfiots appear casual, their pace of life unhurried - not always the case however! Impatience also exists and will be demonstrated at bus stops, shop counters and in banks where only visitors would dream of queuing up quietly.

The people of Corfu take their Orthodox religion, with its elaborate ceremonies, most seriously. It is a common sight to see the black robed priests with their long beards bustling through the streets all around the island. Perhaps the most marvellous thing about Corfu is that it has absorbed so much yet changed so little. Peasant women still jog along side saddle on their mules carrying home bundles of firewood. When you gaze at the fishing nets hanging in the sunset, as they always have, one feels that the beauty of this emerald isle will endure, as it has to date, despite all manner of assault over the past 2,500 years.
